MICHAEL RAYMOND CARSON, Long Beach, California

A memorial service and mass will be held Tues., Aug. 18, at ll a.m. at St. Edward's Catholic Church, Waterloo for Michael R. Carson, 37, formerly of Winterset. Mr. Carson died August 8, 1992, in Long Beach, Calif., of natural causes.

Born August 29, 1954 at Madison County Memorial Hospital, Michael Raymond Carson grew up in Winterset and graduated in 1972 with high academic honors from Winterset schools following his junior year. He graduated from the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, then received his Master's Degree in piano performance in 1976 from the University of Texas in Houston. He was an artist in residency from 1976-77 at Simpson College, then received his Doctorate of Music Degree in piano performance, conducting and coaching of opera from the University of Southern California.

He served at the assistant director of the Virginia Opera in Richmond, Virginia from 1979 to 1981, and then was appointed Associate Professor of Music at California State University in Long Beach. At Cal State he was awarded a tenured professorship and became the director of the University Opera. He served in that capacity up until the time of his death. Mr. Carson also studied music, specializing in piano performance, at the Des Moines Metro Summer Festival of Opera and the Los Angeles Opera Theater.

He is survived by his father and mother, Dr. Raymond and Georgia (Bussanmas) Carson, Waterloo; five sisters, Margaret Ray Szumowski of West Springfield, Mass, Patricia Berman of Santa Monica, Calif., Georgeen Corrigan of Homewood, Ill., Kathleen Asher of Los Angeles, Calif., and Christine Kuramoto, also of Los Angeles; and one brother, Steven Carson of Amherst, Mass.

A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church in Long Beach, August 30. A memorial fund has been established. Memorials may be made to the Michael Raymond Carson Music Memorial Fund, California Community Foundation % Dr. Raymond Carson, 3427 Rosehill Terrace, Waterloo, Ia, 50701.
