Homer I. Allen, 91, of Winterset died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at his residence in rural Winterset.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset with Pastor Ed McDaniel and Paster Dean Coridan officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the North McDonald Cemetery at Madison County. Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 27, from noon to 8 p.m. at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to his family for a future designation.
Homer was born on June 19, 1921, at Winterset to Hiram and Mary (Brittain) Allen. He was raised in Winterset and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942. Homer married Dorothy Irene Porter and they lived in California from 1957 until 1990, when he returned to Winterset following the death of Dorothy Irene. He had been head custodian for an elementary grade school in California and a bus driver until his retirement. On Sept. 22, 1990, Homer married Florence White at the Winterset City Park. He was a member of the Winterset Seventh Day Adventist Church.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Irene Allen; his sister, Bertha Violet McDonald; and his grandson, Jonathan Allen.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Allen of Winterset; his sons, Richard Allen of Hailey, Idaho, and Rex Allen of Hailey, Idaho; stepson, Mark Jenkins of Stover, Mo.; his daughter, Rosemary Waite of Bryson City, NC; nephew, Rick Lucas of Bakersfield, Calif.; niece, Janet Lucas of Bakersfield, Calif.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
