Bruce Harrop Gaumer, 79, of Earlham, IA, went to be with the Lord on July 24, 2012 surrounded by his loving family following a long battle with cancer. He was dearly loved, and he was a loving husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Bruce was born to Russell Harrop and Helen (Sayers) Harrop in Centerville, IA in 1933. He had two sisters, Annette and Jacqueline. Following his parent’s divorce, his father married Margaret (Whitney) Harrop and his mother married Oscar Cle Gaumer, a 54-year career military man. Bruce was an “Army brat” during World War II while his stepfather was serving as an officer in military police companies in Minnesota, Colorado and Missouri.

Following the War the family returned to Des Moines where he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1952. He took his stepfather’s name prior to joining the National Guard. In 1952, he married Beverly Wasgren, and they had six children. They were divorced in 1978 after 26 years of marriage. In 1980, he married Barbara (Bark) Toma, and they lived in Urbandale, Des Moines, Van Meter and the Earlham area during their 32 year marriage.

Bruce loved the Lord and loved to share with people how they could be saved. Whenever there was an opportunity, he quoted Romans 10:9. “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Bruce was a charter member of Crossroad Church, Earlham, Iowa where he served as both a deacon and an elder, and he loved to distribute God’s Word as a member of The Gideons International, especially at the Dallas County Jail.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; children: Brenda (Greg) Wilkinson of Liberty Hill, TX; Bruce Gaumer of Houston, TX; Brian (Denise) Gaumer of Ankeny; Barbara (Clark) Cobb of Houston, TX; Barney (Megan) Gaumer of Ankeny; and Bridget (Matt) Thompson of Altoona; stepchildren, Laura (Bryan) Derby of Des Moines and Trish Toma; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Annette (Jim) Brady of St. Louis, brother-in-law, Dean Shelby of Kent, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Jacque.

Memorial contributions may be made to Crossroad Church of The Gideons International.
