Death of Michael Morrissey

Michael Morrissey, a resident of Minneapolis for the past fifteen years, died at the home of Edward O’Brien, 1507 Adams street northeast, Monday morning, February 3rd, after a long illness.

Deceased was born near Middleton, County Cork, Ireland, in September, 1838, and came to America in 1855. He was in the southern states during the Civil War and enlisted in the Confederate army. When peace was declared he came north, settling in Iowa, where he purchased a large tract if land, and was married in Churchville, that state, about 40 years ago to Miss Mary Ryan.

His wife died some eight years since. Eight children survive him, namely: Margaret, Roger, Michael, Patrick, Thomas and Edward Morrissey and Mrs. Catherine Zetlmeier, Nora and Alice Morrissey.

On Wednesday morning his remains were conveyed over the Burlington road to Prescott, Wis., the funeral services being conducted by Rev. Father Baur in St. Joseph’s church, interment following thereafter in St. Joseph’s cemetery, that city. Of his brother and sisters none are now living. He was the last of his generation. “May his soul rest in peace.”

Transcriber’s note: There were nine children surviving as listed. Michael and Mary Ryan Morrissey were married February 1, 1876 at St. Patrick’s Irish Settlement Catholic Church by Patrick Smyth, Catholic priest, Madison county, Iowa. Michael’s birth date was actually October 3, 1838.
