Lawrence Bailey, 81, of Altoona died Monday, June 4, 2012, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 8, 2012 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. A visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, June 7, with family present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials to the family to use for veterans causes will be appreciated.
Lawrence was born March 30, 1931, in Winterset, Iowa, the son of Willis and Nanna (Alcorn) Bailey. He graduated from Winterset High School in 1949 and joined the USAF in November 1950. After serving a year in Korea, he started work for the United States Postal Service as a clerk in 1956, and later becoming a carrier until retiring in 1987. He married Myrtle Young on Feb. 16, 1957, at the Dodge Center Methodist Church in Afton, Iowa, and had three boys, Kenneth, Richard and Michael.
He was preceded in death by a son, Richard.
Lawrence is survived by his wife, Myrtle of Altoona; his sons, Kenneth of West Des Moines and Michael of Altoona; a daughter-in-law, Shelley Bailey Hargrove; four brothers, Merle of Laurens, SC, Floyd of Indianola, Marvin of Des Moines, and Paul of Des Moines; three sisters, Ella Reed of Indianola, Irene Osborn of Ottumwa, and Delores Wray of New Castle, Ind.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
