Mr. and Mrs. Peter Lienemann, Elmer Lienemann and Daughter Killed When Passenger Train Hits Auto, Fifth Member of Family Probably Fatally Injured

One of the worst crossing tragedies in years occurred at Van Meter yesterday when the west bound Rock Island passenger struck an auto, killing four members of the Lienemann family and perhaps fatally injuring the fifth, who was taken to the hospital unconscious.

In the auto were Mr. and Mrs. Peter Lienemann of Jefferson township, this county, their son, Elmer Lienemann, wife and little daughter about 5 years of age. The auto was enclosed with side curtains and it is supposed the occupants failed to see the west bound passenger, which is due in Van Meter about 9 a.m.

Mr. and Mrs. Pete Lienemann, their son, Elmer, and the granddaughter were killed outright. Mrs. Elmer Lienemann was carried on the cowcatcher until the engine reached the depot, which is a short distance west of the highway crossing. She sustained severe injuries and was taken to a Des Moines hospital in an unconscious condition.

The affair is one of the saddest chapters in the life of that community. The Lienemanns are among the older families of Jefferson township, the older Lienemanns coming to this county from Jackson county some forty years ago.

Mrs. Pete Lienemann, one of the victims of the accident, was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerhardt Storck. Mrs. Elmer Lienemann is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Niendorff, all long-time residents of Jefferson township.

LIENEMANN FAMILY

Of the four victims of the terrible accident which happened near Van Meter Nov. 23, when the auto in which they were driving to Des Moines was struck by a train, Peter B. The wife of Peter Lienemann was Clara Maria Dorothea, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Garret Storck, born July 8, 1868, in Clayton county, Iowa, and married Feb. 28, 1889, in Jefferson township. Her age at the time of the accident was 52 years, 4 months and 15 days. Besides her son, Clifford, she is mourned by her mother, Mrs. Garret Storck, and four sisters, Mrs. Ida Meyers of DeSoto, Mrs. Amanda Dimber of Luverne, Ia., Mrs. Albertina Floto of Ireton, Ia., and Mrs. Katharine Witchouke of Hilbert, Wis.

He leaves besides his brother, Clifford, his wife, Amanda, the only survivor of the accident. She is at present, in Mercy hospital at Des Moines, and the doctors have good hopes for her recovery.
