John T. Lyon

John T. Lyon was born in Jones county, Iowa, July 22, 1856, and departed from this life at 8:45 o’clock on the evening of October 30, his age being 64 years, 3 months and 8 days.

He came to Madison county in 1880 and was married to Melissa Benge in 1882, to which union four children were born, three dying in infancy.

He was actively engaged in business in this city until eight years ago when he had a stroke of paralysis from which he never fully recovered. In the last few months he has steadily failed in strength, and for the past three weeks has been a great sufferer. This suffering continued until relieved in death.

As a young man he was actively engaged in the work of the church uniting with the Church of Christ in this city eight years ago. Since that time he has been unable to attend the services but little. Yet, though unable to attend the services of the church, he repeatedly expressed himself as having the hope of a Christian man, and safe in Jesus Christ. Near the close of life he asked to be gathered home, and found joy in the expression Jesus Saves. When conscious this was one thing he repeated many times.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, one son Glenn and wife, three sisters, Mrs. Ida Williams, Clarinda, Iowa, Mrs. Effie Walters, Oklahoma and Mrs. W. E. Shoemaker, Afton, Iowa. The two brothers that survived him are Robert Lyon, Alva, Oklahoma and William of New York City. Also one sister in law, Elmyra Benge, who made her home with them here in the city. There are also many other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was held from the Church of Christ on the afternoon of November on, Dr. N. C. Carpenter, pastor, delivering a sermon. Burial in the Winterset cemetery.
