Clarence Shutt of Lewis Dies -

Clarence Shutt, 74, a resident of rural Lewis, died Tuesday morning at the Cass County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Shutt was an engineer for the Rock Island Railroad for 32 years.

The son of William and Bessie Cashman Shutt, he was born Nov. 5, 1910, near Saint Charles and graduated from the New Virginia High School in 1929. He was married to Ada Cone in Valley Junction Dec. 9, 1933, and they farmed for two years in Wes Des Moines. Mr. Shutt later worked for seven years at the Penn Dixie Cement Plant in West Des Moines before joining Rock Island.

The couple moved to Atlantic in 1969 and to Lewis in 1971. He was a member of the Lewis United Congregational Methodist Church, a member of the Lewis Lodge of the AF& AM of Lewis and a ham radio operator.

Surviving are his wife, two sons, William Shutt of Little Rock, Ark., and Russell Shutt of Leon; two daughters, Mrs. Jim (Shirley) Lindsay, of Decatur, Ill., and Mrs. Loretta Lamb of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Nelson of Cedar Falls and Mrs. Garon (Burnis) Hughes of Denver, Colo. and three nieces. He was proceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Ronny Shiffer; and a great-grandson, Daniel Davis.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Roland Funeral Home, Atlantic, Iowa

Services for Clarence Shutt, 74 of Lewis, formerly of Des Moines, who died of emphysema Tuesday at Cass County Memorial Hospital, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Burial will be in St. Charles town cemetery.

Mr. Shutt was born in St. Charles and lived in Des Moines most of his life. He moved to Lewis in 1969 and was a retired engineer from Rock Island Railroad and was a member of Masonic Lodge 137 and Order of Eastern Star there. He was a former mayor of Lewis.

Survivors include his wife, Ada; two daughters, Shirley Lindsay of Decatur, Ill., and Loretta Lamb of Des Moines; two sons, William of Little Rock, Ark., and Russell of Leon; two sisters, Gladys Nelson of Cedar Falls and Burnis Hughes of Denver, Colo.; 18 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Relatives received the news of the death of Clarence Shutt, 74, of Lewis. The son of the late Will and Hessie Shutt he died Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Cass County Memorial Hospital of emphysema. Funeral services were Saturday at the Roland Funeral Home at Atlantic. Burial was at the St. Charles Cemetery.
