Walter Bumbarger of Osceola, former St. Charles resident, passed away at the hospital in Iowa City Thursday, May 20. Funeral services were held in Osceola Saturday afternoon at three o’clock with burial in the St. Charles cemetery.

Walter Bumbarger Dies Thursday

Walter J. Bumbarger, 214 East Grant street, died at the University hospital in Iowa City at 8 o’clock this morning (Thursday).

Bumbarger, retired painter and decorator, had been ill and hospitalized for several days.

Survivors include his wife, Nora Bumbarger, a daughter, Mrs. Frank Teller of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a grandson, James Teller.

Funeral service plans were unavailable at the time the Sentinel went to press.

Walter J. Bumbarger

Walter J. Bumbarger, son of George and Roxanna Rundle Bumbarger, was born near New Virginia, Warren County, Iowa, October 9, 1875. He died at a hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, May 20, 1954 at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 11 days.

He resided in Warren and Madison counties until about 34 years ago when he came to Osceola with his family where he has since lived.

On October 17, 1900 he was married to Nora H. Fife at St. Charles, Iowa. To this union were born four children, a daughter Truth, a son George who died at two years of age and two infant sons.

Mr. Bumbarger was preceded in death by his parents, three sons and a sister Nellie Strawn. He is survived by his wife, Nora, his daughter Truth, son-in-law Frank T. Teller and grandson James. Also surviving are two brothers, Harry of New Virginia, Iowa, Wesley of St. Charles, Ia. And two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Souders of New Virginia, and Mrs. Emma Hayworth of Indianola. There are other more distant relatives and many friends.

He has been an active member of the Christian church for many years. He had served many terms as an elder and member of the official board of the Osceola Christian church.

Funeral services were held at the Miller Funeral home Saturday, May 22, 1954 at 3 o’clock. The Rev. Warren Hile officiated. Emil Rinderspacher accompanied by Amy Ruth Harlan sang two selections. Pallbearers were Ray Easter, Everett Saylor, M. F. Adams, W. G. Swan, George Denly and Ray Kerns.

Burial was in the St. Charles cemetery.
