John Holmes received word last week of the death of his brother Ellsworth Graham Holmes, at Elida, New Mexico. E. G. Holmes, who was 77 years of age, had been in poor health for a number of years. The deceased who was a son of the late John S. and Elizabeth Beem Holmes, was born in Scott township, Madison county, May 14, 1865. He was raised in that township and was married to Miss Laura Belle Harrell, Oct. 6, 1887.
They continued to make this county their home until in 1904, when they moved to New Mexico, and were one of eight early settlers who located eight miles northwest of Elida, in what became known as the Hsawkeye Valley. Mr. and Mrs. Holmes resided on their homestead until 1939, at which time they retired from the ranch and moved to their home in Elida. The paper in that town said that Mr. Holmes was a “very active and progressive citizen. He was at one time engaged in the mercantile business in Elida, and was continuously engaged in farming and ranching. He was the owner of considerable land and property at the time of his death.
Mr. and Mrs. Holmes were the parents of five children. Mrs. Holmes died Feb. 5, 1941, and two of the children preceded him in death, Harry in 1905, at the age of 16, and one son in infancy. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. J. F. Bremen of Mansfield, Mo., Mrs. A. R. Henderson of Van Court, Texas, and a son Floyd of Elida. He also leaves the one brother, John Holmes of Winterset, 28 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Holmes were held Mar. 27 at the Baptist church in Elida, of which he was a member and burial was made in that town.
