News of Interest from St. Charles

Burial services were held at the St. Charles cemetery Wednesday evening for Harris Cole of Des Moines. He was 92 years old and a Civil war veteran. The family were residents of this community many years ago, before going to Des Moines.

COLE, 92, DEAD; CIVIL WAR VET

Enlisted at Age of 16 in Union Army

Harris Cole, 92 of 6205 S. W. Tenth st., who enlisted with the 34th Illinois infantry in the civil war, died of pneumonia at his home Tuesday evening.

A resident of Bloomfield township 31 years, Mr. Cole was ill when the state G.A.R. encampment was held in Des Moines last week. He was a retired farmer.

Mr. Cole was 16 years old when he enlisted at Dixon, Ill., Mar. 6, 1865. He was taken ill with measles when his company left for the front, however, and never saw action.

Surviving are his wife, Phoebe; two daughters, Mrs. Anna Cox and Mrs. Fanniey Langdon of Des Moines; three sons, Leonard H. And Fred of Des Moines, and H. B. Of Carlisle, Ia.; 13 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
