J. R. LAYTON DIES

J. R. Layton of Des Moines died last Thursday morning, May 22nd at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Mason. Mr. and Mrs. Layton had come to Winterset Wednesday evening to spend a few days with the latter’s son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Mason, and death came the next morning from a heart attack.

Mr. Layton who was 76 years of age was born near Peoria, Ill. He located in Des Moines in 1911, and opened the Manhattan café, which he had since owned and operated. He was married in 1913 to Laura McCollum.

The Rev. Peggy Athey Bell conducted his funeral services at the Layton home in Des Moines Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. and burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.

Mr. Layton is survived by his wife, and three step children: Mrs. L. E. Mason of Winterset, and Mrs. Bertha Somers and Mrs. Leota Woods of Des Moines.

News of Interest from St. Charles

Burial services were held at the St. Charles cemetery Saturday afternoon for Jessie Layton of Des Moines. His wife was formerly Laura Hoff, and was a member of this community some years ago, but her home has been in Des Moines for a number of years.
