Fred Strong Dies in California

Fred Strong one of Winterset's oldest business men died recently in California where he had been for many years. a letter received by Chas. McMillian from D.T. Welch also a former Winterset business man, states that Mr. Strong fell from the back stairs on a cement pavement, striking the back of his head. He was picked up unconscious and died the next morning twelve hours after the accident. Mr. Strong had an apoplectic stroke several years ago but Mr. Welch's letter did not state that his fall was due to apoplexy.

Fred Strong came to Winterset about 1880 with Richard Price and started a lumber yard near the old depot grounds. He was a successful business man, and retired from business about 15 years later. Mrs. Strong died several years ago.

Death Of FRED STRONG

For many years a resident of Winterset and Prominent in Business Affairs

Fred Strong, who for many years was prominently identified with the social, religious and business life of this community, died at his home in Pacific Grove, Calif., on April 18th, 1919, at the age of 83 years. On the evening previous to his death, he fell from the back steps at his home, striking his head on a cement walk. It is thought that this hastened his death, though he was quite frail from advanced years.

Mr. Strong came to Winterset in 1879 and for many years was engaged in the lumber business with Richard Price. In 1900 he moved to California.

In 1888 his son, Albert Strong became a part owner of the Madisonian and in 1898 the older Strong bought S. D. Alexander's interest in the paper, the father and son publishing the paper in partnership until September, 1899, when they sold to Thompson & Smith. Further facts concerning his life are given in the following notice published in the Pacific Grove paper:

Mr. Strong was born in Strongsvale, Ohio, on the 5th day of July 1835, of New England descent. Strongsvale was named for Mr. Strong's grandfather. When a young man he went to Minnesota, dividing the time up to fifteen years ago to a busy business life in that state and Iowa, following the retail lumber business and handling grain and other farm cereal products.

In February, 1861, he was married to Miss Mary Elizabeth Angell, who died here in 1907. To them two sons and a daughter was born: Albert Strong of Fort Dodge, Iowa; Edward Strong of Minneapolis and Miss Virginia Strong of Pacific Grove. Mr. and Mrs. Strong came to Pacific Grove in 1904 from Iowa, and this had been their home in the Golden State until death called them.

Mr. Strong was a member of the Presbyterian church in Monterey, and was for many years one of the elders of that organization, always active in doing his part in carrying on the work of the church. He was also an active citizen, taking part in the general affairs of the community in which he made his home.
