Mary Junkin, eldest daughter of Peter and Isabelle McQuie, was born in Oneida, Knox county, Illinois, May 15, 1862. There she lived with her parents until 1871 when she came with her parents to Madison County, Iowa. Here she grew to womanhood and attended school.

On December 22, 1885 she was united in marriage to George Thompson Junkin, also of Madison County. The continued to make their home in Madison county until December 1887, when they purchased a farm west of Dexter and moved to that location. They spent the greater part of their married life on this, their home farm and were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding on the home place.

Since the loss of her husband Sept. 13, 1938, she had made her home with her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Bast, of Dexter. Here she was tenderly cared for during her declining years and the long illness that preceded her death. The end came on Sunday morning, January 7th, 1940, at the age of 77 years, 8 months and 22 days.

She was a loyal, untiring mother, and a devoted wife; her every thought being for the happiness of her family. She was never too busy to stop and pass the time of day with a friend or a neighbor who might come to call. Her cheery words will be missed and long remembered by all who knew her.

Mrs. Junkin was a loyal member of the Dexter Methodist church, having presented her letter and joined in May 12th, 1912, at the time Rev. S. L. Boyers was pastor.

The children are: Effie, of Dexter; (Mamie) Mrs. Ben Tate, Jackson, Minn.; (Dosha) Mrs. John Bernau, Joy M., Earlham, Iowa; (Isabell) Mrs. Orville Bast, Dexter, Iowa; (Hazel) Mrs. Vernon McCleary; Walter L., Adel, Ia. And Chester G., Perry, Iowa. Besides the children she leaves to mourn her passing, 15 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and two sisters, Maggie and Jennie McQuie of Earlham.
