J. W. Carman passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert Nichol in Des Moines last Tuesday morning. He has resided here for a number of years.

COUNTY NEWS – ST. CHARLES

Another Veteran and Pioneer has answered the roll call. Mr. Jacob W. Carman died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert Nichol, of Des Moines last Tuesday morning. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church at Hanley, Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. L. Allen and was buried by the side of his wife who passed away May 1, 1905.

Mr. Carman was born in Menard County, Illinois, in 1842 and was a member of the 42 club at St. Charles. He lived near Old Salem, the home of Abraham Lincoln when a boy, and Mr. Carman had the distinction of being personally acquainted with Mr. Lincoln, in fact, Mr. Lincoln often visited the home of Mr. Carman’s father, and in the year 1831 a raft was being launched on the Sangamon River, and Walter Carman and two other men were thrown into the river, it was the ingenuity of Lincoln that the men were rescued.

Mr. Carman joined the Army serving during the war, and then married and came to Madison county in 1868.

He leaves two sons and three daughters: Charles C. Carman of South township; Mrs. Robt. Nichol, of Des Moines; Mrs. Josie Nixon of Hubbard Cinn.; Prof. Ernest Carman of Columbus, Ohio; and Mrs. Walter Breeding of South township.

Mr. Carman suffered from a stroke of paralysis about three years ago, and at times seemed to recuperate but for the last year he had been declining until his death came.
