PROMINENT DESOTO CITIZEN SUCCUMBS

John Armstrong Was Leader of Church and Civic Affairs

DeSoto—(Special)—John R. Armstrong, one of DeSoto’s oldest and most highly respected citizens, died at his home here last Wednesday after a brief illness. He had been in failing health for some time but was confined to his bed only a little over a week. He was 83 years of age.

For many years he was a prominent farmer south of Van Meter. After his retirement from the farm a number of years ago, he moved into DeSoto, which had since been his home. Here he was prominent in both community and church affairs and had been a member of the town council.

He was a member of the Fairview Methodist church and later transferred his membership to the DeSoto Methodist church when he moved here. He served on the church board for many years.

His wife preceded him in death about four years ago, and two of his children died in infancy.

He leaves three sons and two daughters: Albert Armstrong of Dexter, Paul Armstrong of Earlham, John Armstrong of Winterset, and Mrs. Herman Jensen and Mrs. Lucille Bond of DeSoto.

Funeral services were held last Friday at the Methodist church here, and burial was made in the cemetery at Stuart.

He moved with his wife to DeSoto nine years ago. Since the death of his wife, he has been sharing his home with his daughter, Lucille and family. He leaves to mourn his passing, the children, twenty-two grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, besides other relatives and a host of friends.
