Death of DR. SAMUEL NEWTON SAYRE

Dr. Samuel Newton Sayre died on Friday evening at his home in Saint Charles. On the previous Saturday he called at the N. W. Oglesbee home being taken sick with influenza on arriving home. Pneumonia followed, causing his death at the age of 64 years.

Dr. Sayre's residence has been in Madison county for the major portion of his life. He taught in and near St. Charles in early manhood, then chose the medical profession for his life pursuit. He grew to be an intimate part of the families and homes in his neighborhood, through his ministration as physician, for no one shares more deeply the joys and sorrows of those about him than the physician who attends to their physical needs.

Dr. Sayre's life of useful beneficent labor has closed, but will not be forgotten by those to whom he brought so much comfort and relief. Regretted by all who came in contact with him, his work will live on in the hearts of his friends.

Funeral services were held at the home on Monday afternoon. Four children, with their mother, survive Dr. Sayre.

ST. CHARLES

This community was shocked when the report came that Dr. S. N. Sayre had passed away. He died trying to save others. He had been waiting upon the family of N. W. Oglesbee and took down with pneumonia after an illness of eight days, died January 10, 1919.

He was born in Warren county, Iowa, June 15, 1855 and came with his parents to Madison county, living on a farm in South township east of the Elm Grove church. The farm was the second home place of H. Hurst until 1852 when he sold it to Norval S. Allcock and later he sold it to Absalom Sayre. The farm is now owned by Sam Clark.

He graduated in medicine in 1881 and first practiced at Peru, then Marne and in 1883 came to St. Charles to practice, continuing to do so up to his last sickness.

Dr. Sayre took much interest in communal affairs and was always ready to lend a helping hand in anything that went for the upbuilding of the town and surrounding community. He served several years as township clerk of South; served several years on the school board and on the town council and was serving as such at the time of his death. His familiar figure upon the streets of St. Charles will be sadly missed.
