LETA HALEY, Lorimor

Leta Haley, 97, of Lorimor, died Monday, January 9, 2012 at her home in Lorimor. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, January 12, 2012 at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Pastor Ben Turner will officiate. Burial will be at the Lorimor Cemetery, south of Lorimor. Open visitation will be 2-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at Powers Funeral Home in Afton, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7:00 p.m. Memorials can be made to the family.

Oleta (Leta) Faye Kalar was born February 22, 1914 in Lorimor to John Ira Kalar and Minie May Akins. Her father died when she was three years old and her mother was remarried in 1921 to George Neiswanger. She grew up in the Arispe and the Lorimor areas and attended both Arispe and Lorimor Schools. During World War II she worked at the ordnance plant in Des Moines. On June 12, 1944, she was married to Jasper Robert "Lee" Hill in Des Moines, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Sandra Kay and Rebecca Lee. They lived in Waterloo, Iowa for nineteen years where she worked at Rath Packing Plant and later worked as a daycare provider. Additionally, she was an in home seamstress and a Nurses Aid at the St. Francis Hospital. The family moved to Lorimor in 1970, where she and her husband Lee, planted a large garden every summer, and she learned to can and pickle her produce. In 1986, she started working for Delta Manufacturing, retiring in 1990. Her husband Lee passed away in 1988. On September 23, 1990, Leta married her childhood sweetheart, Clarence L. Haley in Winterset. Leta and Clarence were active in the community helping with the senior meals on Mondays and the SHARE delivery and packing. She was also a past member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Clarence passed away in 1998.

Leta is survived by her daughters: Sandra (husband Norman) Schuyler of Port Huron, Mich.; Rebecca (husband Richard) Rutledge of Lorimor; granddaughter: Jo Anne (husband Anton) Halamar of Lorimor; three grandsons: Anthony, Jonathon and Robert Lukes, all of Oregon; stepsons: Roger (wife Darlene) Haley of Visalia, Calif.; Norman (wife Judy) Haley of Silver Springs, Nev.; Temple Haley of Visalia, Calif.; Dan Haley of Comanche, Okla.; niece: Gail Cowden of Pleasantville, IA.; nephew: Mark Means of San Diego, Calif.; niece: Lula Whitehead of Bremerton, WA. and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands; her step-father, two sisters: Edna Means and Gertrude Neiswanger, brother-in-law: Andrew Means and her nephew: David Means.
