Donald Francis O'Brien, 81, of Stuart passed away January 3, 2012 at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 A.M. Saturday, January 7, 2012 at All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday at the All Saints Catholic Church with a rosary being recited at 8:00. Burial will follow the services in Calvary Catholic Cemetery with military honors. Memorials contributions may be directed to the Donald F. O'Brien Memorial Fund, which will be used for the All Saints Catholic Church and the Saints Center both in Stuart. Online condolences may be left at www.johnsonfamilyfuneralhome.com .
Donald was born June 18, 1930 to Clarence and Eva O'Brien, in rural Adair County, Iowa. He graduated from Stuart High School, with the class of 1948. On December 1, 1951, he was united in marriage to Darlene J. Barr, in Stuart and together they became the parents of four children. On January 8, 1952, he served two years in the United States Army, a year of this was spent in Korea during the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church, 50 year member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 146 and VFW, was a Stuart township trustee, and a longtime member of the Farm Bureau.
The rest of Donald's life was spent farming in Adair and Guthrie County. In 2001, Donald retired and built a home in Stuart.
Don, loved spending time with his wife Darlene, watching his grandchildren's sporting events, fishing and deer hunting.
He is preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Eva, infant son, Martin, his brother, Leo and sister, Marie.
Donald leaves behind, his beloved wife, Darlene of Stuart; children and their spouses, Donald F. O'Brien Jr. and wife Nancy, of Dexter, Mary Kathryn Bigelow and husband Lester, of Winterset, and Janet Dickson and husband Jerry, of Menlo; two brothers, Jack and Charles O'Brien; 9 grandchildren, Tim, Kenny, and Dan O'Brien, Troy, Gwen and Jake Bigelow, Matt, Mike and Brad Dickson and their spouses, 15 great grandchildren and a host of extended relatives and friends all of whom will miss him greatly.
