Aged Madison County Resident Died Early This Morning
John Ruth, aged Madison county resident, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. T. L. Moore about four o’clock this morning after a short illness. Mr. Ruth would have been 91 years of age in November, and had been in good health, until about two weeks ago.
Mr. Ruth came to this county with his parents when he was a boy and had since made his home in Douglas township and in Winterset. His wife, who was the former Miss Jennie Francis, died about seven years ago. Their three children survive him: Ross and Roy Ruth, and Mrs. T. L. Moore, all of Winterset. He also leaves two brothers, Joe Ruth of Winterset, who is now visiting his son Clyde Ruth in Clinton, and Alec Ruth of Sawyer, North Dakota.
The Rev. W. P. Fink, pastor of the First Presbyterian church will conduct the funeral service at the Ramsey Richards funeral home, Friday afternoon, Sept. 2, at two o’clock, and burial will be at the McDonald cemetery.

Page 2John Ruth was born Nov. 4th, 1847, in Marshall county, West Virginia, and departed this life, August 31st, 1938, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Moore, being 90 years, 9 months, 3 weeks and four days of age. He was the son of James and Eleanor Wilson Ruth.
He came to Iowa in 1868, and settled on a farm in Douglas township where he lived many years. Mr. Ruth was united in marriage to Nancy J. Francis, at Adel, Feb. 27, 1879. To this union were born three sons and one daughter, James William, Ross T., Roy P. and Vanetta.
His devoted wife and son James, his father, mother, 2 sisters and four brothers preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his passing two brothers: D. J. Ruth of Winterset and W. A. Ruth of North Dakota, the three children, two grandsons, many nieces and nephews, a host of relatives and friends.
Mr. Ruth united with the church at Washington, Ohio, under the ministry of Rev. Ferguson. He united with the local Presbyterian church on July 5th, 1868, 70 years ago, and immediately on coming to the community. He has been the church’s oldest member as well as one of its most interested ones for some years. Mr. Ruth loved God’s word greatly, and has held the esteem of many people by his lofty Christian character.
Funeral services were held at the Ramsey-Richards funeral home on Sept.1st, in charge of the Rev. W. P. Fink. Burial was made in the McDonald cemetery.
