Grace is survived by her three children, Dennis (Diane) of Waukee, Carolyn (Doyle) Hutzell of Adel, and Diane Kneifl of Scranton; six grandchildren, Jodie Hutzell of West Des Moines, Lisa (Ken) Ashley of Urbandale, David Young of Washington, D.C., Darren (Anu) Young of Minneapolis, Angela (Kacy) Bird of Ft. Worth, and Ryan (Ryan M.) Wilson of Chicago; nine great-grandchildren; her sister, Marjorie Rudolph of Storm Lake and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald (1981); her parents, Wesley and Ruth Splittgerber; brother, Ronald; sister, Betty Clausen; and granddaughter, Danielle Hutzell.

Born on March 4, 1921, Grace grew up on the family farm near Varina. She graduated from Varina High School in 1938, earned a two-year degree at Buena Vista College and began teaching. In 1942, she married Donald Young from Waco, NE. Over the following years, they lived in Wahoo, NE, rural Varina, Winterset, Cumming, Van Meter and Adel. During those years, along with being a housewife and loving mother, she managed the Cumming Independent Telephone Company, owned Young's Cafe in Van Meter, managed the Coffee Shop and then the Cloud Room at the Des Moines Airport, resumed her career as a teacher in Van Meter, managed the Howard Johnson Motor Lodge in Des Moines and then worked at the IRS, while at the same time serving as a care-giver first to her husband, and then to her father.

Spending time with her family was her greatest joy. She loved being with her family and friends. She also enjoyed travel, cruises and scenic tours of America, music, gardening, fishing, knitting and crocheting, and wintering in Mesa, Arizona. Grace was a hardworking independent woman while being selfless and a servant to others. Her smile and laughter will be missed.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Adel Methodist Church or Buena Vista University for the Donald and Grace Young Endowed Scholarship Fund.
