Mrs. Mary Nelson died Monday night at her home in the south part of town. Though she had been in failing health for some time her death came suddenly as the result of a heart attack. She was 75 years old.

Funeral services in charge of Rev. Reece of the Earlham Friends church and Rev. Fink of the Winterset Presbyterian church are being held this afternoon (Thursday) at the local Presbyterian church at two o’clock. Interment will be in the Earlham cemetery.

Mary Matilda Curl was the fourth of eleven children of Jacob and Dorcas Curl. She was born near Peoria, Illinois, January 5, 1863. When she was about three years old her parents moved their family to Iowa where they settled near Salem in Henry county. It was there that she grew to young womanhood.

On September 26, 1883 she was married to James Peter Nelson at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. To this union six children were born. Of these, three survive their mother’s passing. They are: Jesse McManus of Earlham, Maude Gray of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Harry Nelson of Des Moines. Her husband preceded her in death in March of 1923. There are eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

The first part of Mrs. Nelson’s married life was spent in various places but in September of 1900 the family moved to Earlham which has since been her home. She was a birthright member of the Friends church and in 1898 united with the Presbyterian church at Ft. Madison, Iowa.
