Frederick H. Kent was born at Fayette, Maine, March 31, 1838 and died at his home in Winterset, on Monday night, Feb. 25, 1918. When yet a young man, he went to Boston, where he remained six years. In 1860, he went to California by way of the isthmus of Panama. He remained on the Pacific coast some eight years and visited the then unknown country now composing the states of Washington, Idaho and Montana. He returned to Maine in 1868, when he was married to Miss S. Augusta Smith, March 15th of that year. Soon after his marriage he removed to Boston, or what was then Charleston, where their son and only child was born in the shadow of Bunker Hill monument.
In 1875, the family started west with the intention of making their home in California. They stopped at Winterset for the purpose of visiting Mr. A. B. Smith, a pioneer merchant of Winterset and a brother of Mrs. Kent and were by him persuaded to remain. Mr. Kent first engaged in the grocery business with O. W. Boyd in one of the store rooms of the new business block which had just been built by Mr. Smith. After one year in that business, he sold his interest to Mr. Boyd and engaged in the meat business with Fred Barger. In 1893 he quit the meat business and engaged in the business of buying and shipping livestock, which he followed for 31 years.
After coming to Winterset, Mr. Kent united with the Methodist church and will long be remembered by members of that organization for his loyalty and liberality. He will also be gratefully remembered by his numerous patrons for his honesty and integrity.
The funeral occurred at the home on Thursday, Feb. 28th, Rev. Fred Harris of Indianola officiating.
