VERNARD WETRICH Loses Life at Pearl Harbor

The bombing of Pearl Harbor was forceably brought home, Monday with a telegram from the Navy department, telling of the death of Vernard Wetrich.

The telegram stated that he was killed in action on Sunday, December 7, 1941.

He had been in the service for six years and during this time had received several promotions and advancements. At the time of his death he was a petty officer.

He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Russell Hester of Earlham and Mrs. Roy Hutzell of Algona and his father, O. A. Wetrich of Dexter.

He attended the Earlham high school for three years completing his last year at Dexter.

A memorial service will be held in his honor at the Friends church in Earlham, Sunday afternoon, December 28, at 2:30 o'clock.

A memorial service was held at the Friends church last Sunday afternoon for Vernard Wetrich, who presumably lost his life in the service of his country Dec. 7, 1941, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Rev. Walter Wilson conducted the services. The Earlham Legion colors were used and Ila Linn and Ruth McLennan blew Taps.

Vernon (sic) Oren Wetrich was born near Dexter, Iowa, Jan. 12, 1917. He graduated from Dexter high school in 1934 and joined the navy in August 1936 and at the time of his death held the rank of a first class petty officer.
