Dr. Earl G. Rozeboom, M.D., Des Moines

Dr. Earl G. Rozeboom died on Monday, December 19th at Iowa Methodist Medical Center from injuries sustained in a fall. Dr. Rozeboom was born on September 15, 1931 to William and Cynthia Rozeboom in Ottumwa, Iowa. He graduated as class valedictorian in 1949 from Ottumwa High School. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, and received a BA in chemistry there in 1953.

In 1954, he married Maxine Mitchell in Ottumwa. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Iowa in 1957, he completed his internship at Broadlawns Medical Center and began a 35-year career as a family practice physician in Winterset, Iowa where he and Maxine raised their three children. He later became board certified in family practice. He was the president of the Madison County Medical Society for several years, and was a long-time member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was one of the last doctors in the county to make house calls.

After retiring, Earl and Maxine moved to West Des Moines, Iowa where Earl enjoyed singing in the Diversity Chorus, playing cribbage, and especially playing bridge regularly at the Bridge House. He also enjoyed coin and stamp collecting, photography, theater, the symphony, and talking about politics and science. He had a passion for classical music and could identify the correct composer after hearing a few bars of music.

Earl is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maxine; children Kay (Steve Kuske) Rozeboom of Des Moines, Dr. Paul (Julie) Rozeboom of Waukee, and Anne (John Morrow) Rozeboom of Des Moines; grandsons Andrew and Jonathan Rozeboom, and Sean Morrow; and two brothers, Dr. Paul Rozeboom of Mankato, Minnesota, and Dr. William Rozeboom of Edmonton, Alberta.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 26th at 3 p.m. at First Unitarian Church of Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be given to Iowa Public Radio.
