Sudden Death of Henry Wallace

Well Known Editor of Wallace's Farmer Dies Suddenly

Henry Wallace of Des Moines, editor of the Wallace Farmer and former resident of Winterset, dropped dead last night while attending the laymen's missionary conference in Des Moines. He was conversing with a friend in the Methodist church, where the conference was held, when he was stricken and died without speaking.

Henry Wallace was perhaps the best known agricultural writer in the United States. He was educated for the ministry and later took up farming and publishing. He moved to Winterset about the year 1878 and while here was editor of The Chronicle which was afterward merged with The Madisonian. He later disposed of his newspaper interests here and for a number of years contributed to The Iowa Homestead. His subsequent partnership and litigation with J. M. Pearce of The Homestead; his success with the Wallace Farmer and his prominence as a lecturer on farm topics are matters familiar to the readers of this paper.

For one advanced in years, his life was remarkable for its activity and usefulness. Only a few months ago he came to Winterset to participate in the semi-centennial of the Presbyterian church.

A few days ago the writer of this article conversed with him in Des Moines, and his kindly interest in Winterset and her people was most evident.

HENRY WALLACE DIES SUDDENLY IN CHURCH.

The veteran editor of the Wallace Farmer, in Des Moines, died Tuesday evening while attending a convention of the Laymen’s Mission Movement held at the first M. E. church in Des Moines. He was conversing with the man sitting next to him, and looked at his watch noting that it was 7:30 and the convention would begin soon. When his head drooped and he gave a gasp, and all was over. Mr. Wallace was 80 years old, but was wonderfully preserved. At one time he was pastor of the Presbyterian church in Peru. He will be missed all over Iowa.
