Week’s Letter from Earlham

Morgan Butner was quite badly injured Saturday evening when the car he was driving and a loaded truck sideswiped on the pavement east of Adel. On Tuesday afternoon Mr. Butner was taken to the hospital in Winterset, where an x-ray showed a basal fracture of the skull.

Word was received here Friday morning of the death of Morgan Butner at the Winterset hospital. The body was brought to Earlham that morning by S. C. Welch. Funeral services are planned for Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church with Rev. Wolfe having charge of the service.

Note: Burial was made in the Masonic cemetery, Dallas Center, Dallas county, Iowa.

INJURIES FATAL TO MORGAN F. BUTNER

Local Man Passed Away Friday Morning at Winterset Hospital

M. F. Butner whose condition was slightly improved on Wednesday of last week, following an automobile accident near Adel on June 22, grew much worse on Thursday afternoon and passed quietly away on Friday morning about 8 o’clock.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church in Earlham, conducted by Rev. Wolfe, who was assisted by Rev. Feay. A quartette composed of Mr. Welch, Mrs. Soderberg, Mrs. Arthur Marks and Mr. Mervyn McLennan sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Haven of Rest,” the latter being Mr. Butner’s favorite hymn. Mr. McLennan and Mrs. Marks also sang “In the Garden.”

Pallbearers were Ross Reynolds, Harry Hunter, Claud Mark, Leonard Welch, Orla Andrew, and Kenneth Johnston.

The many and beautiful floral tributes were in care of Mrs. C. B. Stanley, Mrs. Lush, Mrs. Carl Bricker and Mrs. Reynolds.

Interment was made at the Masonic cemetery at Dallas Center.

Butner, Mrs. Leland Sanders and son of Fonda; Mr. Walter Condron, Miss Margaret Condron, Mrs. Mary Brown of Des Moines; Mrs. E. A. Richmond, Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Richmond and son, Mr. W. H. Kent, all of Dallas Center; Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Knox, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Crane of Granger; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hileman and daughter, of Perry; Mr. and Mrs. John Moyer, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brenneman of Minburn; Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Knox of Mount Ayr; Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Hood, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hood of Newton; Miss Opal Knox of Cedar Falls.

Morgan Franklin Butner, son of Daniel and Minora Butner, was born near Clarence, Missouri, on March 15, 1897, and passed away at the Winterset, Iowa, hospital at 8 a.m. Friday, June 28th, 1935 following a serious automobile accident. At the time of his demise he was 38 years, three months and 13 days of age.

He was educated in the Public Schools of Missouri, and attended the Presbyterian church which was the choice of his people.

At the age of nineteen he came to Iowa, where his first employment was with Ford Motor Co. of Adel.

On March 27th, 1930, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Irma Knight of Dallas Center, Iowa. To this union was born a son, Robert Keith. Mr. Butner also provided a home for, and gave a father’s loving care to his wife’s son, Donald Knight.

Mr. Butner followed his chosen occupation of mechanic for many years, being employed at Adel, Dallas Center, Cedar Falls and Atlantic. Following six years employment as shop foreman at the Herring Motor Co. in Atlantic, Mr. Butner had a shop of his own for a short time. In 1928 he came to Earlham, Iowa, where he was employed by the Hunter Motor Co. He was serving in this capacity when seriously injured in a car accident on Saturday, June 22nd.

Mr. Butner was kind-hearted and pleasant to all, generous almost to a fault, fair in his dealing with the public. He had many, many friends and very few enemies.

He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and sons; and aged father and mother; five brothers: L. M. Butner of Fonda, Iowa; O. B. Butner of Clarence, Mo.; J. D. Butner of New Florence, Mo.; M. C. and E. N. Butner both of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Mrs. J. S. Cron of Centerville, Iowa; twenty-nine nieces and nephews, and a large number of other relatives and friends.
