Fern Viola Cooper, 94, of Winterset, Iowa, died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011, at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1, at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset with Rev. Dr. John Shaull officiating. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery.
Visitation will be today (Wednesday, Nov. 30) from noon to 8 p.m. at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials given to the family will be directed to Middle River Hospice or West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation.
After high school, Fern taught country school in Clarke County. Her students included the younger siblings of Howard Miles Cooper, whom she met when he took them to school and whom she later married. When H.M. returned wounded from WW II in 1944, she helped him start Cooper Truck Lines, which they operated for 50 years. Fern was a great supporter of all her children’s school activities, including being president of the North Ward PTA, room mother, Cub Scout leader, Girl Scott leader, Sunday school teacher and attending all of their sporting events, music programs, dance programs, plays, and any other event they were involved in. Fern enjoyed being part of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, holding various offices. She belonged to several circles at the Methodist Church, which she attended and hosted. Fern and Miles loved to go dancing and hosting friends and relatives for card games at their home. They also enjoyed traveling all over the United States with friends and relatives as well as spending winters in Arizona for many years.
Fern is survived by her children, Richard L. (Jeanne) Cooper of Branson, Mo.; Sharon Dooley of Brooklyn, Iowa; and Shirley (Roger) Lents of Frisco, Texas; grandchildren Micha Cooper, LaDonna Gallardo, Rebecca Reinhart, Daniel Lents, Christy Lents, Shari Bush and Tshanta Spencer; great-grandchildren Tessa, Seth, Caleb, Eli, Isaac, Audrey, Grace, Jonathan J, Anna, Ryan, Danelle, Amber, Dylan, Lizzie, Sierra, Erika and Spencer; sisters-in-law, Ruby Hendrickson, Doris Miller and Maimm Miller; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Beulah (Jacobe) Miller; husband, H.M. “Miles” Cooper; brothers, Delbert Miller, Lowell Miller, Kenneth Miller, and Keith Miller; and sister, Ruby Hiatt.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by
McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
