One Dead, Three Injured In Crash

Walter Eisele Dies Sunday After Fatal Van Meter Motor Accident

Van Meter Special, July 26th---

One person is dead and two others are seriously injured as the result of an automobile accident which occurred last Friday on a hill near the Herman Niendorf home, a few miles south of Van Meter.

Walter Eisele, of Van Meter who was riding with Ralph Fundinger, also of that town, died Sunday. His chest had been crushed when Fundingers’ car crashed head on into a car driven by L. E. McCorkle of DeSoto. Both Fundinger and McCorkle are in serious condition, the former having a serious elbow injury. McCorkle is suffering from six broken ribs and some torn ligaments in his side. Aaron Stump who was riding with McCorkle, escaped with a few bruises.

The accident occurred when both cars met at high speed at the top of a hill, both of them holding to the center of the road. Both cars were badly wrecked.

The injured men were rushed to a physician in Van Meter for emergency treatment. Fundinger was taken to the Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines where they are attempting to save his arm. McCorkle was removed from the Van Meter hospital to his home Saturday.

Walter Eisele was a well known resident of the Van Meter neighborhood. He was 32 years of age. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Helen Fundinger, and a baby daughter Joan.

Funeral services for Eisele were held Tuesday afternoon at the Trinity Lutheran church, conducted by the Rev. C. Lillie. Burial was to be made in the Lutheran cemetery.
