Page 2, Columns 4, 5 & 6Ernestus Northrup Van Hosen was born in Marion county, Iowa, March 11th, 1847 where he spent his boyhood. He moved to St. Charles in Madison county when a young man, and was there united in marriage to Sarah Carter. They were the parents of six children, four sons of whom survive him. They are Walter L., Orville H. of Des Moines and Charles and Ernest of Los Angeles, California. Sarah Van Hosen died in 1887.
In 1891 Mr. Van Hosen married Anna M. Hillerman of St. Charles. They were the parents of five children: Mrs. C. J. Trawver and W. K. Van Hosen of Des Moines, Mrs. W. C. Bovee of Red Bluffs, California, and Clarina and Dorothy. The latter two are dead.
In addition to his widow and children, Mr. Van Hosen is survived by several grandchildren, two great grandsons, two sisters: Mrs. Ellen Porter of New Virginia and Mrs. Patience Blain of Long Beach, California, and one brother, Winfield of Sioux City.
Early in life Mr. Van Hosen became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and adhered to this faith throughout his life. His life was characterized by untiring industry, faithfulness to home and family. He was eighty-seven years of age at the time of his death.
