Earlham Library Obituary Collection
Earlham, Iowa
October 1940

Charles A., son of Josiah and Sarah Stanley was born in Madison county, Iowa, July 27, 1862 and departed this life October 29, 1940 at the age of 78 years, three months and two days.

He received his education and grew to young manhood in the vicinity of Earlham.

He was married to Margaret Ann Wolverton January 13, 1885. A happy union endured for fifty-five years.

The happiest event in their long married life was in 1935 when they celebrated their golden wedding with all of the living children and grandchildren.

He was a birthright member of the Conservative Friends church, a man of kindly personality, devoted to his family and his home. He never sought an easy task but was willing to do his share of the worlds hard work and was never too tired or too busy to help his neighbors or friends who were in need.

He leaves to mourn his passing seven sons, Frank and Chester of Winterset; George of Stuart; Cletus of Cumming; Clifford of Dexter; Ralph and Wayne of Earlham; three daughters, Mrs. Caroline Clements of Earlham; Mrs. Leah Cook of Dexter; and Mrs. Helen Hougham of Des Moines; forty grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Four sons Viret, Ira, Earl, Lloyd and two daughters Mrs. Mable Cook, and baby Margaret preceded him in death.

His wife Margaret preceded him September 15, 1940. He spoke often of her after her passing, and only cared to live the few lonely days.

He also leaves a brother Ira Stanley of Earlham; four sisters, Mrs. Savannah Fry of Ames; Mrs. J. H. Williamson of Earlham; Mrs. Esla Baker of Oskaloosa; and Mrs. Laurence Jacobs of Hotchkiss, Colorado.
