Rites Held for Gene Corkrean

Funeral services for James E. (Gene) Corkrean, well-known resident, were held this Wednesday morning from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Winterset.

Mr. Corkrean died Aug. 18 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines following a short illness. He was 52 years of age.

A life-long resident of Madison County, he was born on May 19, 1923 in Lincoln township, a son of James A. and Frances Kirvin Corkrean.

He was a World War II veteran, and on Aug. 18, 1951 was married at Winterset to Shirley Palmer, who survives.

Mr. Corkrean was a farmer, and in recent years operated a maintainer for the Madison County roads department.

He was a member of the American Legion, and of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are four sons and four daughters: Steven, John, Richard, Kathleen, Colleen, Patty, Terry, and Laura Corkrean, all of Winterset.

He is also survived by his mother, Frances, of Winterset, and by four brothers and three sisters: John of Cumming, Phillip of Macksburg, Elizabeth Neal of Winterset, Mary Corkrean of Omaha, Nebr., Larry of St. Charles, Sue Corkrean of Winterset, and Patrick Corkrean of Winterset.

Officiating at the 10 a.m. Requiem Mass Wednesday was the Rev. Msgr. William J. McMahon. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery.

A rosary for Mr. Corkrean was recited Tuesday evening at the Collins Funeral Home.
