Carolyn attended elementary school in Winterset, Iowa and graduated from Earlham High School in 1965. She grew up with her brother James and later was joined by brother Jerry and sister Dena. On June 17, 1967 Carolyn and Paul Kenneth Schwartz II were married and this union was blessed with two children: Paul III and a daughter Holly.

Carolyn was employed by Principal Financial Group as a records manager. She retired after 32 years so she could spend long-awaited time with her beloved grandchildren. Carolyn enjoyed getting together with close friends and family for late night cards and games. One of her favorite games was the weekly Yahtzee tournaments for the "Queen Bee" prize, which she still holds the title. She also spent a lot of time working on her collections, which included many rocks, antiques and unique statues including elephants and native American picture frames. She took great pride in collecting family heirlooms. Carolyn spent many summers fishing the day away with her brothers and sister. She took many pictures of her family throughout the years and enjoyed displaying family photographs. She became an extremely good photographer. She surrounded herself with these photos, which held many fond memories for her. She was also an excellent cook.
