Margaret Irene (Mapes) Gilman, Stuart

Margaret Irene (Mapes) Gilman, 98, of Stuart, passed away, August 5th at her daughter-in-laws home. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, August 8, at the Stuart-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Stuart. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, August 7, at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart. Burial will follow the services in the Penn Center Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stuart-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. Irene was born January 24, 1913 to Festus and Lois (Spear) Mapes in Earlham, Iowa. She attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Earlham High School. She then taught country school for three years.

On August 22, 1934 she married Roy Gilman. Three children were born to this union: Howard, Doris Jean, and Lola Marie. They lived in Laurens, Mapleton, Manning, and Stratford before settling in Stuart in 1944.

For several years Roy and Irene ran the American Hampshire Sheep Association from an office in Stuart. Irene was an active member of the Stuart-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church where she held various offices in the UMW, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday school for many years. She was also involved with the Legion Auxiliary and a 4-H leader for about ten years. She enjoyed playing bridge.

Irene is survived by her daughter-in-law, Joyce Gilman of Adel, Iowa; grandchildren, Jennifer Frappier and her husband Raymond of Texas, Peter Gilman and his wife Luann of Cedar Rapids, Benjamin Gilman and his wife Patty of Menlo, Elizabeth Gilman and her husband Tom Small II of Des Moines, Missy Frysinger and her husband Mike of San Jose, California; great- grandchildren, Nicolas and Catherine Frappier, Hannah, Abigail and Rachel Gilman and Kayla Gilman. Also surviving is her sister, Frances Piper of Minnesota.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three children, and her sister, Ruth Gilman.
