Burial Here For Ruth McElwain

Graveside services were held here Saturday, August 22, at 2:30 p.m. for Ruth McElwain, a former resident of Winterset who died last Wednesday, August 14 at the Colorado Lutheran Home in Arvada. She was 79 years of age.

Mrs. McElwain was born in Stuart, Iowa, January 29, 1895, the sixth of nine children of the late Rev. Elmer Elsworth Ilgen Fritz and Mary Elizabeth Seacrist Ilgen Fritz. Her childhood was spent in various Iowa towns and she graduated from Chariton High School. She attended college at Iowa State University at Ames, Des Moines University and Colorado University at Boulder. Her teaching career covered many years in Kansas, Iowa and Wisconsin.

After her marriage to Ralph McElwain, on August 5, 1925, in Monroe, Iowa, she resided in Kenosha, Wisconsin. In 1928 they moved to Winterset, where her husband died in 1955. She has been living in Colorado since 1970.

While living in Winterset, Mrs. McElwain was a member of the Madison County Antique Association, the Iris Club and the E and L Club. She was also a longtime member of the United Methodist Church and a 50 year member the Delta Delta Delta Sorority.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Janet Ruth (Tom) Sangster, of Golden, Colorado, three grandchildren; two brothers, Paul Ilgen Fritz of Santa Monica, Calif., and Dr. Hugh Ilgen Fritz of Winterset and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth (R. J.) McElwain, of Kenosha, Wisconsin.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Winterset ----------------, Golden West Manor, 1655 Adams Circle, Boulder, Colorado, where Mrs. McElwain resided from 1971 - 1973.

Officiating at the graveside service was the Rev. Walter Samp, with burial in the Winterset Cemetery.

Here To Attend McElwain Rites

The out of town relative who were here last Saturday to attend the graveside rites for Mrs. Ralph (Ruth) McElwain were as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Tom Sangster, and Karen Scott and Tom of Golden, Colorado, Mrs. R. J. McElwain of Kenosha, Wisconsin, Mr. and Mrs. Ilgenfritz and daughter, Jane of Des Moines, Mrs. Susan Farlow and Vicki and LeAnn of Ankeny and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Davis of Tracy, Iowa.

Mr. and Mrs. Sangster arrived here Friday afternoon and were the guests of their aunt, Mrs. Dwight Johnson until Sunday. Mrs. R. J. McElwain of Kenosha, remained with her niece, Mrs. Johnson until Monday morning, she making the trip by plane.
