Harry Paul Wilson Skaggs, age 94, of Earlham, died at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset on Monday April 11, 2011. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday April 14, 2011 at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with burial amd Military Rites at the Earlham Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday April 13, 2011 at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham from 3 to 7 p.m., where the family will greet friends from 5 to7 p.m.
Harry was a member of the First Christian Church in Winterset, a member of the Green Rogers American Legion Post in Winterset, and a lifelong farmer in Madison County, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife Helen Skaggs of Earlham; daughter Carol Belding of Earlham, son Harry Skaggs Jr. and wife Mary of Earlham, eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Harry PW Skaggs, was born the son of Henry and Lillian (Farrington) Skaggs on August 17, 1916 in Fairbault Co., near Blue Earth, Minnesota and died on April 11, 2011 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset, Iowa at the age of 94 years, 7 months and 25 days. Harry attended country school nearby until his father died unexpectedly and Harry took over the farming operation. On December 22, 1942 Harry entered the US Army and served in the European and African theatres during WW II until December of 1945.
Harry returned to the states and upon meeting Helen Lane in Truro, Iowa they were married in St. Louis, MO on February 14, 1947. This union was blessed with two children: Carol and Harry Jr. Harry had worked as a farm laborer in Swea City, Iowa and in 1948 rented Helen’’s father’’s farm near Truro, Iowa. They also farmed west of Winterset until 1962 when they moved to their farm near Earlham. They retired and moved into Earlham in 2008.
Harry and Helen travelled to visit friends and family and visited places such as Montana, where they rafted down the Snake River. They also travelled to Boston where Harry had a helicopter ride. Other places they visited were Colorado, and Louisiana. Harry and Helen belonged to a ““pitch”” card club. Harry was a member of the Green Rogers American Legion Post 184 in Winterset and a member of the First Christian Church in Winterset. Harry was very particular about keeping his lawn and garden neat and clean. He was also an avid woodworker, building lawn ornaments, signs, and toys for his grandchildren.
Harry is survived by his wife Helen Skaggs of Earlham; daughter Carol Belding of Earlham, son Harry Skaggs Jr. and wife Mary of Earlham, 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Lillian Skaggs, brothers: Bud and Curt Skaggs; sisters: Daisy Engstrom and Della Hoeck.
