Earlham Echo – November 12, 1931

Alexander McQuie, son of Peter and Isabelle McCulloch McQuie, was born in Oreetone, Scotland, June 30, 1855, and passed to the Great Beyond on November 4, 1931 at the age of 76 years, four months and four days.

As a child of two years he came with his parents to America in 1857, locating in Knox County, Illinois, where they lived for 14 years. The family moved to Madison County, Iowa in 1871 and the home then founded was always Home to him.

Alexander enjoyed the privileges of the public school system and was thus fitted to meet life and its responsibilities; choosing the life of a farmer he was active and successful in that capacity until his physical strength failed.

Mr. McQuie was united in marriage with Miss Dicy Speer February 26, 1896 and together they founded a home in sight of the parental homestead; following the death of his wife in 1930, he returned to share the old home with his sisters Margaret and Jennie who have lovingly and devotedly ministered to his every need from that time until the closing hour of his life, Wednesday, November 4.

Outstanding characteristics of Uncle Sandy, as he was affectionately called by nieces, nephews and children of the community, were abounding good nature, generosity and a warm hospitality; no one ever entered his home, even briefly but felt assured of a cordial welcome.

He had a way of approaching children, of drawing them into conversation that won friends for him among little people, where ever he became acquainted.

Mr. McQuie will not soon be forgotten; the splendid heritage of his Scotch ancestry was always evident in his spirit and manifested in every social relationship in which he served. He was unobtrusive, kind and loyal to an unusual degree.

Of the family circle left to cherish his memory—three sisters, Mrs. George Junkin, of Dexter; Margaret and Jennie at home, and one brother, William, of Loveland Heights, Colo., remain.

His parents having preceeded him in death many years and in more recent years by the death of his youngest sister, Mrs. Isabell McQuie Moore, August 28, 1927 and that of his brother Peter, January 31, 1929.

Many other relatives, including nieces, nephews and cousins will sadly miss this staunch friend of their earliest recollection.

Note: Burial was made in the Penn Center cemetery.
