MADALYN P. LYNN, Des Moines

Madalyn P. Lynn, age 97, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Wesley Acres.

Madalyn was born in Winterset, Iowa on January 26, 1914 to Dr. Carl and Mamie Hickenlooper. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1932, attended Grinnell College, and graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. degree in 1936.

Madalyn taught English for one year in Buffalo, Iowa. She married John E. Peterson, a graduate of the University of Iowa law school. In 1938 he joined State Finance Company, which is now Wells Fargo. He was executive vice president and treasurer, and lobbyist for small loan companies. They had two daughters, Sandra Peterson and Susan Wistey.

Madalyn was initiated into her mother's P.E.O. chapter AG in 1934. She was a member and past president of P.E.O., chapter HY, and Pi Beta Phi sorority, holding offices in the alumnae club. She was a Blue Bird leader for four years and West District Camp Fire chairman for two years. Madalyn was always active in P.T.A., holding offices, and was a volunteer in mental health groups. She was a long-time member of Plymouth Congregational Church, having served as Deaconess and in other volunteer capacities.

She was an avid Bridge player, liked travel, gardening, stitchery, and entertaining family, friends and various groups to which she belonged. For over fifty years she enjoyed membership at Wakonda and the Des Moines/Embassy clubs. After the death of Madalyn's husband, she married Lyle Lynn, former advertising manager at the Des Moines Register.

Preceding Madalyn in death were her husband, John Peterson; daughter, Sandra Peterson; husband, Lyle Lynn; and one sister, Margaret Johnston.

Madalyn is survived by daughter, Susan Wistey (Brian) of West Des Moines; two granddaughters, Anne Lucas (Todd) of Aledo, TX., and Emily Kirby (Randol) of Salt Lake City, UT; three great-grandchildren, Tyler Anne and Miles Lucas, Mason Kirby; and one step-daughter, Sandra Riggs of Lake Forest, IL.

A visitation will be held in the Community Room at Wesley Acres, 3520 Grand Avenue in Des Moines, Monday, March 28 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. After an interment at Glendale Cemetery, a Celebration of Life will take place at Plymouth Congregational Church, 4126 Ingersoll Avenue in Des Moines at 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 29. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Plymouth Congregational Church or the Good Samaritan Fund at Wesley Acres.
