Death of Mrs. Merritt Ogburn

Mrs. Merritt Ogburn, who has been residing at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sam Powell, died last Wednesday, January 11th. Mrs. Ogburn, who had been in poor health since the death of her husband three years ago, was 78 years of age. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Eldridge, and was born in Shelby county, Indiana, February 28, 1849. She came with her parents to Madison county in 1855 and they made their home in a log cabin which until recently, stood on the Eldridge place, east of Winterset. She was married to Mr. Ogburn in 1875, and to them were born three children, two of whom survive her, Mrs. Powell and Mrs. Elvie Chaffee, of Yakima, Washington.

The Ogburns made their home in the Peru neighborhood until in 1916 when they moved near Winterset. Mrs. Ogburn leaves besides her two children, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Louisa Quinn, of Ainsworth, Nebraska; and four brothers, Will and Lot Eldridge, of Winterset; Melvin, of Des Moines, and Albert, of Murray.

Rev. A. P. Keast conducted the funeral services in the Peru Methodist church, Saturday afternoon, January 14, and the burial was in the Peru cemetery.

Mrs. Merrit Ogburn

Nancy Ellen, daughter of William and Rebecca Eldridge was born in Shelby county, Indiana February 28, 1849. She came with her parents to Madison county in 1855 and they made their home in the log cabin which recently has stood on the Eldridge place, east of Winterset. He girlhood and young womanhood were spent here and she was united in marriage to Merritt Ogburn October 28, 1875.

Three children were born to them, one died in infancy and the others are Mrs. Sam Powell of Winterset and Mrs. Elva Chaffee of Yakama, Washington.

She was converted and united with the Methodist church in Peru in 1892. They made their home near Peru for many years till they moved near Winterset in 1916.

Mr. Ogburn passed away nearly three years ago, since then she had been in poor health and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Powell on January 11, 1928, aged 78 years, 10 months and 15 days. She leaves beside her children, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Louisa Quinn of Ainsworth, Nebraska and four brothers, Will and Lot Eldridge of Winterset, Melvin of Des Moines and Albert of Murray.

The Rev. A. P. Keast conducted the funeral services in the Peru Methodist church Saturday afternoon, January 14 and burial was in the Peru cemetery.
