Leland L. Hope, 93, of Winterset died Monday, March 14, 2011.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 17, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare of Winterset where Pastor Scott O’Conner will officiate. A visitation will be held from 1-8 p.m., today (Wednesday, March 16) at Ochiltree Funeral Service, where the family will be present to receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Burial will be in the Gordon Cemetery, Lincoln Township, Madison County with military honors preformed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8142 and The American Legion Post 184 both of Winterset. Memorials may be directed to the Winterset Community Church or Calvary Baptist Church of St. Charles.
Leland Lewis Hope was born Jan. 7, 1918, in Topeka, Kan., the son of Claude W. and Grace E. (Bordon) Hope. He attended school at Buffalo Center School in Scott Township, Madison County until graduating from the eighth grade. He attended and graduated from Winterset High School in 1935. Later he served in the United States Army during World War II serving in the Pacific Theater from 1941 to 1945.
His marriage to Mary L. Ball took place in Winterset on April 6, 1948.
Leland worked as a brick mason for 20 years, as well as working as a janitor and bus driver for the Winterset Public Schools. He also worked as a custodian at the Madison County Court House and was a grounds keeper for the Lakeview Country Club and City of Winterset, maintaining the Winterset City Park. When he retired he continued to work maintaining several country cemeteries mowing during the summer months. He attended the Winterset Community Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and nine siblings; Claude Hope, Irene McCollum, Ralph Hope, Gertrude Mapes, Helen Tolley, Harold Hope, Dorothy Knight, Donald Hope and Edna Addy.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; his son, Bryce; his daughter, Bonita Bunton all of Winterset; two grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters.
