MARY A. HIATT

Mary A. Holmes was born in Tuscarawas county, Ohio, Sept. 20, 1842. In 1854 she came with the family to Van Buren county, Iowa, and three years later to Madison county, where she has since lived. She was married in 1865 to Elijah Hiatt, who died in 1903. Her five children: Alonzo A. of Commerce, Viola and Martha Hazen of Creston, Ernest of Winterset, Wayne of Truro, 11 grandchildren and two brothers, Archibald of Truro and James of Winterset, are left to mourn her death.

A member of the Christian church from girlhood, she made her influence felt. No one ever came to her to be turned away uncomforted. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and a charter member of the Woman's Relief Corps, of which she was chaplain at the time of her death.

No one will be more missed than “Grandma” Hiatt. Coming here when the country was new, she watched the settlers come, the land cleared and the towns grow. She saw her friends leave her and she, too, set her “house in order”, ready for the same summons, which came October 12th, 1916.

She was buried October 14th in Hartman cemetery, beside the one she loved and mourned for, and has at last gone to join.
