Lee was born November 17, 1922 in St. Charles, Iowa. She was the daughter of Ella Beatrice (Edmundson) Coons and Edwin John Coons. Lee graduated from Lincoln High School of Des Moines in 1940 and lived most of her adult life in the Des Moines and West Des Moines area. She married Calvin (Cal) Luckett on May 3, 1942.
Lee enjoyed reading non-fiction books as well as the daily newspaper from end to end even though the newsprint frequently made her sneeze. She refinished antiques, many of which were handed down from family members. Garage sale hunting was a favorite weekend sport. Lee was thinking "green" long before it was popular, re-using containers, bags, wrapping paper and other items commonly thrown away. Lee was an accomplished seamstress sewing most of her daughter's clothes in her younger years.
Lee had a background in bookkeeping and helped her husband Cal when he worked for Snap-on Tools and later when he had his own business Cal's Auto Tune-up Parts.
Lee was the caretaker of the family, helping family members as they fell ill. She never failed to be at her husband's side daily as he succumbed to Alzheimer's disease.
She is survived by her daughter, Shari Bucher and granddaughter, Amy Bucher of Des Moines, IA; son, Kirby and daughter-in-law, Robin (Kleve) of Iowa City, IA; two brothers, Elwyn (Anna) Hand of Altoona IA and Charles (Nita Lee) Hand of Bettendorf, IA; and several nieces. She was preceded in death by her infant son Roger, infant grandson Bryan Scott Saner, and husband Calvin.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at McLaren's Chapel, 801 19th St, West Des Moines. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of Central Iowa Foundation or the American Cancer Society .
The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers at Kavanagh House on 56th St, Des Moines for their compassion, respect, and professionalism.
