Miss Emily Porter died at the home of her brother, W. P. Porter, in Davidson, North Carolina, Monday afternoon, May 24th, after an illness of four weeks. Miss Porter left Winterset shortly after her mother’s death five weeks ago, for Chicago. After her arrival in Chicago, she was forced to go to bed at the home of her cousin because of a complete nervous exhaustion. At the end of two weeks she was not much improved, but she was anxious to go to her brother’s, so he came after her. Her condition did not improve and she was put in a hospital. She was unconscious during the past week and the doctors diagnosed the case as sleeping sickness.

The body was brought to Winterset this morning and funeral services are being conducted at the United Presbyterian church this afternoon at two o’clock by Rev. W. Z. Allen.

Miss Porter was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Porter. She was graduated from the local high school, and attended Iowa State Teacher’s college at Cedar Falls and Monmouth college, at Monmouth, Ill. She taught school for a number of years, and for the past few years has been doing social service work in connection with the World Purity federation.

She will be missed by her many friends over the state, and in this community, which has been her home since her birth forty-seven years ago.
