Peru News

Uncle Fred Beeler, after a long winter of suffering, passed peacefully away at two o'clock Saturday morning, April 17, 1915, at his home south of town. The most of the time during the last five days he lay in a semi-conscious condition and his suffering were not so great. His four sons and their wives were with him when he laid aside the mortal to put on immortality.

Another old landmark is gone but his work remains a monument to be his industry, honesty and frugality. He will be missed, not alone by his family, but by a large number of friends, who have known and honored him for long years.

Funeral services were held at the home Monday at 11 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Sammy Howe, of Truro. Interment in the Ebenezer cemetery.

Biography of FRED BEELER

Walnut Township Pioneer writes sketch of his life

“I, Fred Beeler, son of Fred Beeler and Ann Stults Beeler, was born in Baden, Germany, Dec. 4, 1835, and came to the United States with my parents in 1846 and settled in Ripley county, Indiana. In 1854 I went to St. Louis where I worked at my trade as blacksmith. In the spring of l855 I went to Leavenworth, Kan., worked at my trade in Leavenworth and Kansas City until 1858, both of these cities then being mere villages and then went overland to the Rocky mountains, where I mined for gold with moderate success until July 1860. Came to Madison county, Iowa, in October 1860. In 1861 I made two trips across the plains with ox teams loaded with provisions from Winterset. Was married to Nancy McClure Jan. 9, 1862. To this our union were born 5 sons, the eldest, Otto, died with cholera infantum at the age of 22 months, and the other four sons have grown to manhood in this community and this our journey of 32 years on this earth was ended Feb. 12, 1901.

All of that time we lived on the same place or farm that we both loved, where all our sons were born and reared to manhood, and where I expect fully to end my days, be they few or many, and I die in full confidence of a Divine power, who made and controls the universe that there have been no changes or control that we know of. Whatever was made by Divine power is perfect and remains perfect so far as the other world is concerned. We do know Divine power is for good not for evil. We believe that we should do unto others as we wish to be done by.

For years I watched as my old friends, one by one, paid the debt of nature. The years have robbed me of strength to some degree until I realize my turn to go is not far hence and the thought does not distress me. When most of man's dearest associates are on the other side and when time has robbed him of all his opportunities and passions, life hold but few charms to claim his thoughts and death possesses few terrors. It promises rest and reunion, Aged 79 years, 4 months, 13 days.”
