NYLE JURGENSEN, PATTERSON

Nyle B. Jurgensen, 86, died peacefully on his farm near Patterson, Friday, Dec. 10, 2010.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 17, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. A visitation will be held from 2-7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 16, at the funeral home, where the family will be present to receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, near Van Meter. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated at a later date.

Nyle Bernau Jurgensen, the son of Jes Henrich Gustav and Laura (nee: Bernau) Jurgensen, was born Dec. 23, 1923, on a farm near DeSoto, Iowa.

He attended country schools, and enlisted in the United States Army during World War II. In the army, he served in the 264th Anti-Tank Company, 66th Infantry Division of the “Black Panthers”.

Following the war, Nyle returned to Iowa where he married Shirley Mae Root on Feb. 14, 1948, in Des Moines. To this union were born four children: Jeannine, Lee Alan, Karen and Niki. After tenant farming near Belmond, Iowa, he moved his family to a farm near Patterson, where he farmed for over 50 years.

Nyle and Shirley loved to ballroom dance, traveling throughout Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri. Nyle’s passion was farming. He enjoyed John Deere tractors. “If it wasn’t green, it wasn’t mean.”

Those surviving to carry on his legacy include his daughters, Jeanie Kennedy (partner, Don Abbott) of Bemidji, Minn., Karen (husband, Randy) Hauschildt of Earlham, and Niki Steenhoek (partner, Dave Pizzo) of Ormond Beach, Fla.; a sister, Wanda Gattman of North Augusta, SC; a former son-in-law, Daryl Steenhoek of Altoona; four grandchildren – Kelly, Travis, Justin and Derek; and five great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; an infant son; his wife, Shirley, of over 45 years; a sister, Monna Rose Mitchell; and a son-in-law, Dennis Kennedy.
