George Matthew Stanfield, son of Samuel and Jane Stanfield, was born in Vermillion county, Illinois on October 9, 1840. He died at his home in Winterset on April 10, 1915, aged 74 years and 7 months.
He came to Iowa with his parents when a child and settled in Dallas county, near where Van Meter now is located. He was one of the earliest pioneers. He saw and had a part in all the development of the country. He was united in marriage with Miss Jennie Keckley on December 7, 1865. To this union were born two children, one a daughter who died when fourteen months old, and a son, William, now of Victor, Colo.
In response to the call of Abraham Lincoln for volunteers, Mr. Stanfield enlisted in the Second Iowa Battery in 1860 and reenlisted in l864. He took part in sixteen battles in defense of the Union and was a member of Pitzer Post, Grand Army of the Republic at the time of his death. He moved to Winterset from Van Meter in 1875 and for the past thirty-seven years he has been a respected resident of this community.
His father was a preacher of the Gospel in the Quaker church and he was trained in the way of righteousness from his youth. He was converted when a young man and confessed Christ. He became a member of the United Brethren church. He died in the faith, a couple of days before the end he sprang up from the couch saying, “I have seen heaven. I want to go there and I dont care how soon.”
He is survived by his wife and son and many relatives and friends.
