Funeral services for Rev. J. H. Young were held at Van Meter, on March 22nd at 3 p.m. Eight United Brethren ministers were present, besides the pastor, and the superintendent of the Otterbein Home in Ohio. Rev. E. W. Curtis of Des Moines, read a sketch of his life. Supt. King gave a brief talk of his life at the home, Rev. C. E. Dillewan of Des Moines preached the sermon. Dr. Duncan, district superintendent, led in prayer. The choir of the Castle Memorial church sang beautifully.

James H. Young was born in Huron county, Ohio, Feb. 20, 1834 and died at the Otterbein Home at Lebanon, Ohio, March 19, 1925. His age was 91 years and 29 days. In the fall of 1857 he joined the United Brethren church and was licensed to preach and joined the annual conference in 1870, and was ordained by Jacob Markwood in 1862. He has written of glorious meeting, 1500 converted, built and bought churches. Until 1875, his membership was in Rock River county, Illinois, where he was pastor, he gave active service at Van Meter, Scranton and other places. He gave considerable time as an evangelist, spent some time in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas; also on the Pacific coast.

He became broken in health and retired from active work, but continued to be a bright and shining light. He lived 35 years in Van Meter. He went to the Otterbein Home about five years ago, and was most happy and contented in the home, in his letters calling it “the ante room of Heaven”. He came to Will county, Illinois when 17 years old. He was married to Augusta O. Merrill, Sept. 10, 1862 in Whiteside county, Illinois. She preceded him in death July 9, 1903. To them were born one son and three daughters, one daughter being recently deceased. We mourn not at his departure, but rejoice in his transfiguration.

Note: Burial was made in the Union Chapel-Jefferson township cemetery.
