Winterset Madisonian – February 1, 1923
Pg 1

An occurrence of unusual sadness was the suicide of Mrs. Savannah Truitt-Polk on Friday, Jan. 27th. Mrs. Polk had been in very poor health this winter because of goiter, which had afflicted her for years. She had become despondent, but seemed to be ------ in general way since her rest in the Winterset hospital.

On Friday morning, Mrs. Polk showed great cheerfulness. She sent her housekeeper, Mrs. Glenn, to town to buy some medicine. Mrs. Glenn, returning in about fifteen minutes, did not find Mrs. Polk downstairs. Becoming uneasy, she went upstairs to search and found one of the chamber doors locked. Securing aid to open the door, it was found that Mrs. Polk had hung herself to the head of the bed.

Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon at the Polk home, conducted by Rev. D. J. Shenton. Burial took place in Winterset cemetery.

Mrs. Polk was a daughter of one of Madison county’s pioneers, Jesse Truitt, who came here in 1858. Before her marriage to the late Charles Polk, she was a teacher in Winterset’s public schools. She was a woman of high integrity, a splendid neighbor and friend. She had endured great suffering for several years, thus causing a state of melancholia that resulted in suicide. This community, where her whole life was spent, was deeply stricken with grief at the sad circumstances attending her death.
