Truro

Truro was shocked Sunday noon when word was flashed over the town that Uncle Caleb Carver had passed peacefully away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Anna Craven, while sitting in his big arm chair and where he was found by Mrs. Craven on her return home from town. He was 82 years old and had been in failing health all winter, yet was able to be up and around the house each day. Obituary next week.

Caleb Carver was born in Lee county, Iowa, Feb. 17, 1840 and departed this life Jan. 14, 1923, aged 82 years, 10 months and 28 days. On Nov. 22, 1869 he was married to Nancy E. Boicourt. To this union were born 11 children, three of whom died in infancy. Eight children grew to manhood and womanhood in this vicinity: Anna M. Craven of Truro, Dr. W. F. Carver of Fort Dodge, Dr. S. C. Carver, who passed away Jan. 7, 1903, Mrs. Mary O. Atkinson who died Jan. 8, 1897, Newton Carver, who lived at Ensign, Kans., Rev. M. L. Carver of Hardy, Iowa, Dr. J. Wesley Carver, who died Aug. 8, 1916 and Arthur B. Carver of Truro. As a neighbor, Mr. Carver rejoiced to extend a helping hand. As the end approached there was intense suffering. On Sunday, Jan. 14, while sitting in his arm chair, he fell asleep and awoke in the glory land.

The funeral was conducted from the M. E. church Tuesday at 2:30, by Rev. Matthews, assisted by Rev. R. L. Raybourn and S. C. Howe, and the body laid to rest in the Ebeneezer cemetery, southwest of Truro.

Mr. Carver and family came to Madison county, settling on the old Carver homestead. Mr. Carver was among that sturdy class of pioneers who battled with the wilderness of a new land and helped to make the country what it is today.

In early childhood, he gave his heart to God and his hand to the church. Through the years he walked with God, a staunch supporter of the church and of every good cause. For many years, Mr. Carver was a steward, class leader and trustee in the old Ebeneezer Methodist church. His voice in prayer and song will long be remembered by those who knew him.
