“S. B. Wheelock died at the home of his son, M. B., in this city, at 1 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23. Although not unexpected, his passing caused unusual sorrow among our citizens. Mr. Wheelock has been in poor health for some years and was confined to his bed for the past three weeks, his death resulting from paralysis. He is survived by his wife, son, three sisters, including Mrs. H. Leighton, of this city, and one brother. Funeral was held from the home at 10 a.m. Saturday and interment made at Oak Hill.”
Mr. Wheelock was born in Connecticut in 1847. He came to Winterset in 1862. He enlisted in the 47th Iowa Infantry and served out his enlistment. On his return from the army he engaged in the grocery business and became one of Winterset’s most prosperous business men. About 10 years ago he moved to Colfax, which place has been his home ever since.
